USA Tennis & C’virus: Frances Tiafoe becomes the latest American player to test positive. He announced this a day after playing an exhibition event the All American team Cup held in Atlanta. Japan’s Football League: After four-month due to the coronavirus attack, the J-League will return this weekend on 4th July. The season was stopped during February after only one round of matches were played. All the 18 participating teams will play on the opening day and the main match will be between the defending champion Yokohama and Urawa Reds. Thereby, the players would be permitted to train from 10th July. Recently, a proposal was made in the meeting of the Board of Governors, to restart with 30 teams. British Tennis Restart Plan: The British LTA-Lawn Tennis Association has announced that it shall be organising a series of domestic tennis tournaments behind closed doors and without any spectators. The National Tennis Centre in Roehampton shall be hosting the first four matches of the competition. Football-Wuhan: After a complete lock-down of about three months, football players headed to the pitches in Wuhan, the epicentre of the corona virus in China. The lock-down had been eased in the city earlier this month and now football has made its joyful return too. Skiing-2021 World Championships: The FISI-Italian Winter Sports Federation, has decided to ask the governing body of the 2021 Skiing World Championships, to push back the competition by a year.   • Baseball-Japan: After the country’s government’s decision to ease the restrictions aimed at stopping the corona virus, the NPB-Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League has announced to begin with its 2020 season. Tennis-New Zealand: The tennis fans in New Zealand have been given the good news of the resumption of the elite tennis in the country from 3rd June. Ice Hockey World Championships: The IIHF-International Ice Hockey Federation has announced that it is pushing back the date of the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championships. The competition has been delayed by two weeks with the idea that national league seasons might also be postponed, and time remains for them to be held too. Polo: The HPA-Hurlingham Polo Association has written to 3,000 of its members about the secret games which were being held in private estates. The said that, those involved, are breaking the international rules which had been laid down to reduce the risk of the spread of the corona virus. The HPA has warned the players and have mentioned that such players are putting the whole sport at risk. 

Squash: Professional squash player, Jansher Khan, has said that squash shall beat covid-19. The WSF-World Squash Federation, had earlier this week, given some recommendations to the squash players and clubs to resume the sports with minimum risk of the spread of the novel virus. The recommendations included the observation of a distance of 2 metres, allowance of half of the usual number of people in the clubs and self-isolation of at least 14 days if an individual feels he is having the corona virus symptoms.

  • Motorsports-Formula 1: The drivers of Formula 1, which is one of the biggest motorsport events, have fully agreed to the idea of “ghost races” without any spectators. This means that back-to-back races shall be held in the absence of fans at Austria’s Red Bull Ring in July. The postponement of the races had resulted in a delay of this season and this is being done to conclude it as soon as it can be.

Basketball-NBA: The management of the NBA-National Basketball Association has said that they are in talks with the Disney World Resort in Florida to resume the season in late July. The season had been paused on 11th March and it is now hoped that the Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex may be the only site which can cater to the needs of the NBA to resume.  

Sports-India: The Sports Minister of India, Kiren Rijiju, has said that India shall not host any international sports events in the future, due to the corona virus. He added that all sports activities from within the country, will be held behind closed doors.

  • Snooker-The Championship League: Snooker’s first competition since the hiatus caused by the corona virus, is set to take place on 1st July. The Championship shall have a total of 64 participants which will be competing for the grand prize of US $ 20,000. Special guidelines such as frequent hand sanitization, regular disinfection of the sports equipment and regular corona testing, are to be observed. Plus, the WST-World Snooker Tour has announced that the World Snooker Championship has been rearranged to take place on 31st July at Sheffield.
  • Cycling-HTV Cup: The second day of the HTV Cup attracted many spectators to their television screens and ended their two-month long want for the sport. 84 participants are currently participating in the Cup which has been planned to conclude on 7th June.

  • Football-La Liga: The institutional complications between Spanish Soccer Federation President, Luis Rubiales, and La Liga Chief, Javier Tebas, ended when Rubiales agreed that matches may be held on Mondays. The La Liga had scheduled many fixtures to take place on Mondays in order to end the season on time, which a commercial court put a ban on. However, Luis Rubiales, having the power to do so, allowed the matches to be held on the opening day of the week. 
  • Cricket-England: 18 bowlers of the English Cricket Team, shall be returning to training on Thursday, after the Board’s plan to restart practices. They shall be practicing in seven different grounds according to the guidelines issued by the Board.
  • Football-Premier League: It was revealed the previous day that six people from the Premier League had tested positive for the corona virus. Four out of the six people have been named so far, while two remain unnamed. Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan, two staff members and defender Adrian Mariappa of Watford are the four which have tested positive. All six have been asked to self-isolate for at least seven days.

  • Tennis-Lawn Tennis Club: The LTA-All England Lawn Tennis Club has for the first time in four years, posted a profit of 8.7 million pounds.   • Hockey: The FIH-International Hockey Federation has announced that international hockey shall only resume after cure or vaccine is made for the corona virus. Other than this, the gold medal favourites for Olympics this year, have said that they might have lost some advantage which they earlier had over their competitors. The Belgians had secured their qualification after the EuroHockey Nations Championships, but their rivals had to play another qualifying tournament before booking a ticket for Japan. 
  • Football-Women’s Super League: The English Football Association has said that it is currently having talks with the WSL-Women’s Super League, to conclude the season earlier. However, no decision or plan has been constituted so far.

  • Baseball-Major League Baseball: The MLB-Major League Baseball have announced that they shall be starting the season by 4th July. This will be the first baseball event since the corona virus has caused all leagues or championships to be postponed. The plan issued by the MLB is facing criticisms from medical consultants, though they are endeavouring to overcome them beforehand. 

  • Football-Serie A: The Italian Football Federation had issued a notification to all clubs on 19th May, to restart team trainings. Many international players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, have flied to Italy after the notification. Further, the Italian Football Federation had planned to finish this season on 2nd June, but now the date has been pushed back to 20th August. They have done so to finish any possibility of playoffs in case the season has to be suspended again due to the ongoing pandemic.

Other world leading players including men’s number one Djokovic, Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Sania Mirza, have backed up his efforts to feed poor families in Pakistan. They have put their signed memorabilia for auction at the Stars Against Hunger auction and the amount they shall be bought for will be forwarded to Aisam.
  • Cycling-HTV Cup: After a break of about two months, the first cycling event took place in Vietnam. All 84 participants participated in it, though under special guidelines.
  • Rugby: Players in New Zealand returned to practice after a two-month long break in any rugby fixtures. Special guidelines such as temperature-checking and frequent hand sanitizing were followed. The teams have started to practice for the country’s new league which has been specially introduced to keep players in form.
  • Football-European Solidarity Cup 2020: Football clubs of Madrid, Milan and Munich have announced that they shall be having a special solidarity cup this year. Each of the clubs’ management have given out their statements confirming this. The matches will take place in all three stadiums of the clubs. The matches are not only being held to demonstrate the solidarity of the three nations, but also to raise funds for medical facilities in Spain and Italy.
  • Bull Riding: The PFB-Professional Bull Riding of the United States has announced that it will reopen its gates for professional bull riding to resume once again in July. The PBR has said that it shall be “expecting” fans in the stands in the bucking bull championship which is planned to take place on 10-12 July. The championship shall take place in the state of South Dakota.
  • Football-Premier League: Six corona virus tests have turned out to be positive out of the 748 tests which were taken across the 20 clubs. The people who have tested positive have not been named and they have been instructed to self-isolate for seven days. The tests were taken on Sunday and Monday this week and are a part of the ‘Project Restart’ of the Premier League.
  • Motorsports-Formula 1: The Formula One has said that it would be impossible that the British Grand Prix takes place if the government does not give exemptions for the sport. The management has said that tens of thousands of jobs will have a major impact if exemptions are not granted for the elite sport to return.

  • Skiing: after the Slovenian government reopened its corona virus lockdown, hundreds of skiers hit the slopes of a local ski resort. The snow cover, at present, is at least 3.5 meters in depth and it is expected that a number of skiers amounting up to 300 may hit the slopes in the following days. Wearing masks and maintaining the social distance is mandatory.
  • Football-La Liga returns: the Spanish League was also given the green signal by its government to restart trainings, though, under special guidelines. These guidelines include the disinfecting of sports equipment, regular temperature and corona testing of the players and the staff and trainings in groups of no more than 10 players.
  • Cricket: the ECB- England and Wales Cricket Board had previously suspended professional cricket until July 1, though trainings shall now continue across the country from next week. The ECB is also planning to host the West Indians in July in ‘bio-secure’ venues. Pakistan’s tour of England may also go as planned. Nonetheless, it has to be noted that if any matches take place, they will be held without any spectators.
  • Rugby: Francis Saili the centre player at Harlequins, has announced that he shall leave his current club at the end of the current season and will join the French rugby club-Biarritz.
  • Football: The Premier League: trainings to continue from Tuesday, May 19, after the 20 clubs unanimously voted in favour of the resumption for trainings. With practice underway, it is in the air, that the season’s planned matches shall restart from June 12.
  • Golf: two-on two charity skins match: Dustin Thompson and the world number one, Rory McIlroy, competed against each other at the Driving Relief two-on-two charity skins match. The match took place without any audience and all social distancing guidelines were observed. No caddies were used, and the golfers carried their bags on their own. A total amount of $5.5 m was raised during the competition, which came from sponsors and donations from around the globe. 
  • Motorsports: the NASCAR-National Association held its first race since the series had been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. No fans were allowed inside the empty Darlington Raceway and only the sounds of the engines and the screeching of the tyres circulated inside. Kevin Harvick won his career’s 50th title and beat his rivals with a 2.15 second lead.
  • Football- UEFA meeting postponed: the governing body for Europe’s soccer, UEFA, issued a statement in which it has said that the meeting schedule for May 27 has been postponed to June 17. It has said that the postponement has been made as matters regarding the venues of the rearranged EURO Cup 2020 remain unresolved. After the venues have been confirmed, the Executive meeting shall be held, and future developments will be discussed therein. The UEFA President also hinted that the number of venues might be reduced to ten, nine or eight if the matter remains unsettled. Up till now, nine venues have been established, he added.
  • Cricket-ICC recommendations: an ICC committee headed by former Indian spinner, Anil Kumble, unanimously suggested that the use of saliva to shine balls should be banned. The recommendation was given keeping in mind the ongoing pandemic and the plans of the governing cricket bodies to restart training and some matches. The committee mentioned that it was a threat to the health of the players as it may lead to the spread of the corona virus.

  • Athletics: Katerina Stefanidi, gold medallist of Olympics’16, won the women’s garden pole challenge by completing 34 successful jumps. The Greek defeated Canada’s Alysha Newman and America’s Katie Nageotte who completed 21 and 30 jumps respectively.
  • Football-The Premier League: The League issued a set of guidelines and rules, under the name of ‘Project Restart’, that shall be followed if training resumes. The most probable date for matches to start again is rumoured to be June 12. Trainings in small groups might restart from Tuesday, May 20, but a vote is yet to take place on Monday morning. Any plans of training shall only continue if 14 out of the 20 English clubs vote in favour of the resumption. Earlier, the managers of the clubs of Newcastle and Watford had shown their concerns over this project calling it a rushed return.
  • World Rugby Council: the international organization announced that they would be postponing all tours which were scheduled for this summer. The decision came out after mutual consultations with the governing bodies of other countries. The tours have just been postponed indefinitely and not cancelled. Trainings in New Zealand continue under some special guidelines. 
  • Cricket-Pakistan Cricket Team’s Schedule: the PCB-Pakistan Cricket Board released a central contract list and the agenda for the next calendar year i.e. 2020-21. As predicted by the Allsportspk panel, the tour to Ireland was postponed within 24 hours of the release of the list.
  • Cycling-The HTV Cup: the Vietnamese cycling tournament shall be held from May 19 – June 7, after the government of the country gave the green signal. The permission was granted since the country had a very minute number of Covid-19 patients and had no reported fatalities. 
  • Tennis: the ITF-International Tennis Federation has announced that it shall be extending its suspension of all tennis tournaments to July 31, 2020. ITF President, David Haggerty, has said that such a decision had to be taken due to the ongoing pandemic. He added that these are tough times and such decisions are an absolute necessity to keep the players and the staff safe.
  • Football-The Bundesliga: the German League has had two live matches behind closed doors till now. It was the first league to resume with the temporarily changed rules in place.
