The Indian Premier League (IPL) was founded on September 13, 2007, by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as an annual franchise-based Twenty20 cricket competition. An auction for the franchises was held on January 24, 2008, which raised $723.59 million, exceeding the reserve price of $400 million.
The inaugural season commenced in April 2008, featuring eight teams: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Daredevils (DD), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Deccan Chargers (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The IPL has a significant prize money structure. For example, the 2022 season offered a total prize money of ₹46.5 crore, with the winning team receiving ₹20 crore and the second-placed team ₹13 crore. Notably, half of the prize money is distributed among the franchise’s players.
