The IOC – International Olympic Committee is considering several options to incorporate digital platforms into traditional Olympics sports in order to stay relevant for a younger audience.

IOC President Thomas Bach revealed the future strategy in a media talk after attending the opening ceremony of Winter Youth Olympics Games in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Bach said that the Olympics authorities were looking into including esports and computer simulations of physical games into the current Olympics program to attract increased attention from the younger generation.

The IOC Chief however declined to provide a concrete schedule in this regard all the while stressing that any decision will be made after thorough discussion and policy engagement sessions with the esports community.

Bach also urged fellow members of IOC to ‘look beyond their differences’ and increase cooperative partnerships with the gaming industry in order to facilitate the transition.

The statement comes after a recent presentation by David Lappartient, the head of IOC’s esports liaison group putting the number of gamers worldwide up to 2.2 billion individuals from ages 12-17.

However, the IOC member Richard Pound urged caution and a complete understanding of the esports community and their principles before moving forward with any kind of collaboration.
