Tennis – 2020 Fed Cup Finals: Czech Republic Awarded Wild Card 

In the finals of 11th Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, Czech Republic will join the 2019 finalists Australia and France and hosts Hungary. The event will be held in Budapest, Hungary on 14-19 April 2020. 

According to ITF announcement, following the input of the Fed Cup Committee and ITF Board, the Fed Cup Finals Board unanimously voted to award the wild card to Czech Republic.

12 teams will play in the Finals. Australia, France, Hungary and Czech Republic will be participate along with the eight winners of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Qualifiers, which will be played and take place on a home-and-abroad basis.

The eight seeded nations (rankings as indicated in brackets) for the Qualifiers will be: 

  • USA (2), Belarus (5), Romania (6), Germany (7), Spain (8), Switzerland (9), Belgium (10) and Great Britain (11).

The eight unseeded nations (rankings as indicated in brackets) for the Qualifiers will be: 

  • Latvia (12), Canada (13), Japan (14), Slovakia (15), Russia (16), Kazakhstan (17), Brazil (18) and Netherlands (19).

Having won the Fed Cup title first time 23 years ago in 2011, Czech Republic having won the title five in 2012, 2014-16 and 2018 has remained the dominant force in the competition..

The team lead by Petr Pala, has been ranked No. 1 in the ITF Fed Cup Nations Ranking since April 2014.  In recent years the team  impressive strength in depth has included the top players such as Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova, Lucie Safarova, Barbora Strycova,

Katerina Siniakova and Marketa Vondrousova. 
In place of Czech Republic, Netherlands which is the next most losing nation in the 2019 World Group II play-offs, will compete in the 2020 Fed Cup Qualifiers.
