The Final and Political Controversy
The tournament culminated in a thrilling final on September 28 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, where India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by five wickets to secure a record ninth Asia Cup title. India successfully chased down Pakistan’s total of 146, largely thanks to a composed, unbeaten knock of 69 by Player of the Match Tilak Varma, with Rinku Singh hitting the winning boundary in the final over.
However, the final was overshadowed by significant political controversy that marred the post-match presentation ceremony. The Indian team refused to accept the winners’ trophy and medals from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President, Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
The Indian team cited Naqvi’s political position and previous controversial actions throughout the tournament as the reason for their stance. The refusal led to a protracted standoff, and the trophy was ultimately removed from the presentation area, with the Indian players celebrating their victory with an impromptu, “mock” trophy lift. This incident was the peak of escalating tensions between the two nations throughout the tournament, which also included the captains avoiding the customary handshake at the toss and heated on-field confrontations.
