Ever since the sports scene has started to rejuvenate, sports organizations have been re assessing various aspects of the existing systems. This is to ensure that in the existing and post coronavirus affected environment the games continue in a conducive manner.

The rules and regulations related to the qualification systems for the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics is an area attentively been focused upon by many sport bodies and organisations.

The ISSF-International Shooting Sports Federation was one of the governing bodies which conducted an exercise and presented some changes to the IOC-International Olympics Committee for updating the qualification system for shooting in the Tokyo Olympics. ISSF emphasized that these amendments would ensure a fair competition at the postponed 2020 Olympics Games. After a diligent review of the presented changes, the IOC – International Olympic Committee approved the recommended update quota system.

According to the ISSF brief about the updated quota system:

  • The latest deadline for Tokyo Olympics 2020 shooting qualification is 6th June, 2021. Accordingly, ISSF will re-allot the unused quota places by 2nd June, 2021, and notify the National Olympic Committees and its Member Federations of the allotted quota places latest by 15th June, 2021.
  • Allotment of the 12 quota places (one for each individual event) will be done based on the World Ranking of March 31, 2020, and the points earned during the World Cup of Rifle/Pistol and World Cup in Shotgun to be held during March-April 2021.
  • Quotas that are most likely to be allotted at the two events – 2020 European Championship Shotgun (Chateauroux, France), and the European Olympic Qualification Championship ( Plzen, Czech Republic), will be allocated at the 2021 European Championship 10m in Lohia, Finland, and at the European Championship 25/50/300m/Shotgun in Osijek, Croatia
  • Further, in case the renewed qualification tournaments mentioned above do not take place, then the quota places that would have been allotted at mentioned qualifying competitions will be then be allotted in accordance with the ranking of the European Shooting Confederation dated May 31, 2020.
