JOHOR BAHRU – Australia’s junior hockey team ended years of final heartbreak in dramatic fashion, edging India 2-1 to lift the 2025 Sultan of Johor Cup at a packed Taman Daya Hockey Stadium on Saturday. The victory marked Australia’s first title in eight years, breaking a frustrating run of three consecutive final defeats since 2022.

The match lived up to its billing as a classic contest between two hockey giants, with both teams displaying exceptional skill and determination. Australia drew first blood in the 13th minute when Ian Grobbelaar converted a penalty corner, but India responded quickly with Anmol Ekka leveling the scores just four minutes later. The game appeared headed for a draw until the dying moments when Grobbelaar once again rose to the occasion, firing home from Australia’s sixth penalty corner in the 59th minute to seal the victory.

The final moments saw incredible drama as India earned six consecutive penalty corners in the last minute of play. However, Australian goalkeeper Magnus McCausland and his defense stood firm, making a series of crucial blocks to deny the Indian attackers and preserve their hard-earned lead.

Tournament Legacy

The victory marked Australia’s first title in the competition since 2017, breaking a run of three consecutive final defeats that had haunted the team since 2022. Australia now joins India as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history, with both teams having claimed three Sultan of Johor Cup titles each

The Sultan of Johor Cup has established itself as one of the world’s premier junior international hockey tournaments since its inception in 2011. The competition, which serves as a crucial development platform for future senior international stars, has seen several nations lift the trophy over the years.

Recent winners:

  • 2024: Great Britain (defeated Australia 3-2)

  • 2023: Germany (defeated Australia 3-1 in shootout after 0-0 draw)

  • 2022: India (defeated Australia 5-4 in shootout after 1-1 draw)

The tournament was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making Australia’s 2025 victory particularly significant as it breaks their recent finals hoodoo and reestablishes them as a dominant force in junior international hockey.
