During the fourth-round match of US Open, the tournaments major favorite Novak Djokovic has been disqualified after by accident hitting a ball a line lady judge.

While playing against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, Novak showed his annoyance after losing a serve to trail 6-5. At this junction, the World No.1 took out a ball from his pocket and hit it behind him, which struck the throat of the female line judge.

After a prolonged discussion, the tournament officials as per the rules defaulted Novak.

The USTA-United States Tennis Association statement stated: “In accordance with the Grand Slam rulebook, following his actions of intentionally hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court or hitting a ball with negligent disregard of the consequences, the US Open tournament referee defaulted Novak Djokovic from the 2020 US Open.”

Further, as Novak was defaulted, thereby, during the US Open all the ranking points earned will be lost. He will also be fined the prize money won at the tournament.

Djokovic was the major favourite to win the US Open 2020 Men’s singles title. Being played without spectators this is the first Grand Slam to be organised after the coronavirus pandemic lock-down.
