LAHORE: The 2nd Chairman WAPDA Amateur Golf Championship became functional  yesterday at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course with competitive activity centering around the senior amateurs and the ladies segment.

The seniors competition is over 36 holes (two rounds) and similarly lady amateurs also fight it out over 36 holes,18 holes each day .

At the end of the first round, yesterday the two skilful ones turned out to be Mian Javed Ali and Imran Ahmed, both associated with the host club, Gymkhana. Mian Javed produced a round of gross 76, and this score of gross 76 was also attained by Imran Ahmed. These two displayed good form and their command over their shot making was noteworthy. The score of gross 76 represents a remarkable effort on their part and reflects consistency and steadiness in their handling of approach shots to the green and followed by level headed putting.

Out of the other participating seniors, those who performed well are Tariq Mehmood (Garrison) and S. Tahir Nawazish (Gymkhana). Tariq managed a gross score of 78 and is placed two strokes behind the leaders while Tahir Nawazish is placed at a score of gross 80. Other seniors in line for honours are Ahsan Ghias, Asad Khan, Col. Saud Khan and Shafiq Bhatti. These four participants seeking prize winning positions are bunched together at a score of gross 81 and through a more determined effort have the ability to cause an upset in the final standings in the second round on Friday – 24th January.

In the race for honours in Ladies section, the pacesetter on the first day was young and upcoming Suneyah Osama of Lahore Garrison. A youthful one who has represented the country overseas, showed immense class in her handling of the challenge of the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course. Through accurate hitting off the tees and avoiding straying from the fairways, she managed to compile a gross score of 79 and thus emerge as leader in the Ladies category. Her commanding standing can be gauged and measured from the fact that she is seven strokes ahead of her nearest adversary, Ghazala Yasmeen. However, Ghazala is not too pulled down by this happening and hopes to come with excellence in the second round and prove a fighting opponent. Out of the other participating ladies, those in line for honours are Ana James Gill, Zaib un Nisa and Sameea Javed Ali.

The champion amateurs enter the 2nd WAPDA Golf Championship on Friday – 24th January, for a three rounds competition.
