New Zealand’s Innings ⦁ With an undefeated record in the tournament New Zealand’s Captain Kane Williamson decided to bat first with unchanged squad. ⦁ Pakistan chose the same squad from the last against South Africa which they won by 49 runs. ⦁ Early rain in Birmingham suggested that batting first could be tricky with early movement on the pitch. ⦁ New Zealand’s openers, MJ Guptill and Colin Munro started the innings for the Kewis. Pakistan handed ball to Muhammad Hafeez and inform Muhammad Amir. ⦁ And as expected, Pakistan were provided with a dream start, courtesy of Muhmmad Amir who deceived MJ Guptill to get him bowled. ⦁ New Zealands captain, Kane Williamson joined Colin Munro. 19 runs partnership between the pair was ended when Pakistani pacer Shaheen Afrdi was introduced into the attack. Left arm fast Shaheen Afrdi trapped C. Munro in caught behind after scoring 12. ⦁ Senior player Ross Taylor was next to bat. Shaheen Afridi continued his magical spell and kept troubling NZ batsmen. ⦁ Aggressive bowling from Shaheen resulted in 3rd wicket for Pakistan as Ross Taylor was sent back to the pavilion after getting caught behind for just 3 runs.
⦁ Powerplay 1 ended with New Zealand’s 44/3 on scoreboard. ⦁ Tom Latham the wicket keeper batsman arrived at creased but fell shortly on just 1 run, courtesy of Shaheen who bagged third wicket in his opening spell. ⦁ With 46 for the lost of 4 wickets, James Neesham joined Skipper in the middle. Both players started rotating strike and kept the scoreboard ticking. ⦁ Sarfaraz introduced Wahab Riaz, Shahdab Khan and Imad Wsaim after the end of Powerplay. ⦁ Once again Wahab Riaz kept a tight line to keep the pressure on Kewis. It was Shahdab who produced breakthrough for Pakistan. An inside edge from captain Kane Villiamson was caught by Sarfaraz Ahmed. ⦁ After a top order collapse and departure of captain, New Zealand was going nowhere with the bat. ⦁ Colin de Grandhomme joined Neesham to continue the innings. New Zealands reached 100 in 31.3 overs with 5 wickets down. ⦁ Both batsmen kept rotating strike, scored few bounderies and put pressure back on Pakistan. They reached to 150 in 38.6 overs, while James Neesham reached to a well fought 50 off 77 balls. ⦁ Meanwhile Grandhomme also reached to his fifty off 63 balls, with NZ reaching to 200 in 46.3 overs. ⦁ 6th Wicket partnership between Neesham and Grandhomme reached to 100 runs in 111 balls. ⦁ Grandhomme departed after scoring 64 in 71 balls, courtesy of a run out. ⦁ New Zealand completed their inning 237/6 in 50.0 overs. James Neesham remain Not Out on 97 off 112 balls. ⦁ After an early collapse could not stop New Zealand to put a defend able total on the board courtesy of an outstanding partnership between all rounders James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme. As Pakistan can be vulnerable while chasing small targets. The NZ innings terminated with a target of 238 Runs. Pakistan’s Innings ⦁ Pakistan’s Opening duo Imam Ul Haq and Fakhar Zaman arrived at the crease to face a reputed Kewi bowling pair of Trent Boult and Matt Henry. ⦁ A quick start from Pakistani players suggested their aggressive mode, as both batsmen hit few boundaries. ⦁ It was Fakhar Zaman who was caught in deep mid wicket after playing wrong line off Trent Boult’s bowling. Fakhar scored 9 off 10 balls. ⦁ Pakistan’s most consistent batsman Babar Azam joined Imam Ul Haq as both batsmen added 35 runs for 2nd wicket partnership. ⦁ Pakistan reached to 44 for the lost 1 wicket at the end of Powerplay 1. ⦁ Imam Ul Haq was surprised by a quick short pitched delivery from Lockie Ferguson and caught at point on 19 runs. ⦁ Senior batsman Mohammad Hafeez joined Azam, when he welcomed with a slip in place and a backward short leg. ⦁ New pair kept rotating strike to build partnership, also kept finding bounderies to take the score further. . Meanwhile Pakistani star batsman Babar Azam achieved an important milestone by becoming World’s second fastest to reach to 3000 One Day International runs in 68 innings, only behind South Africa’s Hashim Amla who had done it in 57 innings. ⦁ As pacers failing to damage any further, Kane introduced off spinner Mitchell Santner and soon joined him in bowling from other end. ⦁ Pakistan renowned for having command on spin bowling, started to struggle against the spin duo. ⦁ Babar and Hafeez reached to 50 runs partnership in 72 balls, while Pakistan crossed 100 runs milestone in 22.5 overs. ⦁ After a dominant start, Muhammad Hafeez once again fell against a part timer. This time captain Kane Williamson grabbed wicket of Hafeez, who was departed on 32 in 50 balls. ⦁ Left hander Haris Sohail was the next to join Babar Azam and continued from where he left in game against South Africa. ⦁ Pakistan once again started building a partnership as Haris Sohail hit first six of the match. ⦁ After 35 overs, Pakistan reached to 145 for the lost of 3 wickets and looked comfortable to chase down the target. . Pakistan 4th wicket partnership reached to 50 in 70 balls after calculative risk from the batsmen on crease. This partnership gave Pakistan the momentum to finish strongly. . Back to back bounderies against Santner took Babar Azam into 80s, as Pakistan reached to 200/3 in 41.5 overs.
