MELBOURNE: The first day of Australian Open 2020 was full of rough games and upset results that kept everyone on the edge as top tennis players from around the world competed in the first Grand Slam event of the year.

The world number one Ash Barty was the first to win her opening round match after recovering from a first set scare against 120 positioned Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine. The unseeded player surprised everyone by claiming the first set 5-7 but Barty regained her top spot and dominated the match 6-1 in later rounds.

An eerily similar pattern was followed in the second match of the day between the world number 2 Novak Djokovic and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. Djokovic was forced to a tie-breaker in the first set and then dropped the third set but managed to win the last set 6-1 to mark his 900th ATP victory.

Unfortunately for Venus Williams, she could not pull off a last-minute comeback victory and was ousted by the 15-year-old Coco Gauff 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. The youngster’s straight-set victory over former world number 1 and seven-time Grand Slam Champion was the second such episode following her win in 2019.

Aside from these, other matches produced more or less expected results with other top players such as Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki registering comfortable victories on the first day of the Australian Open.

The Day 2 schedule includes a number of interesting matches as well such as Men’s top-ranked player Rafael Nadal takes on Hugo Dellien and Maria Sharapova facing Donna Vekić.
