LAHORE: As per the scheduled plan the Uzbekistan rugby team has arrived in Lahore, Pakistan and PRU is all set to stage the two test matches of Asian Rugby Championship Division III-C. 

Supported by Servis Tyres and DHL, the two match series of the championship will be played at Rugby Academy at Lahore Cantonment on April 28 – Sunday and May 1 – Wednesday at 4 pm.

A press conference, was held attended by Asian Rugby representative – Mr. Mathew Cor, the Pakistan 15 a side captain – Mr. Kashif Khawaja, head coach – Mr. Shakeel Ahmed Malik, executive committee member – Mr. Salman Muzaffar and service manager – Mr. Syed Mauzzam Ali Shah.  

During the press conference, Pakistan Rugby Union President, Mr. Arif  Saeed welcomed the Uzbekistan team and considered their arrival as a steppingstone for more international Rugby teams coming to Pakistan.

Mr. Saeed informed that officials from four countries will be officiating the matches. Elaborating, he said that it was the wish of PRU to have played the matches at the Punjab stadium but due to the pitch not being of international standard, thereby, PRU had no choice but to hold the matches at Lahore Cantonment.

According to PRU officials, the national team is a blend of talented players, which has been selected after trials held in different parts of the country. It was also highlighted that eight of the players are featuring in international game for the first time.

The team captain, Mr. Kashif hoped their team will qualify for Division II after their win over Uzbek team. “PRU is doing every bit to raise the game from the grass root level with its players development programme.”

Head coach, Shakeel Ahmed was confident and believes that all the players are fit and eager to play and win. “I am hopeful the team will deliver as expected after their hard held training,” he added.
