The third round of Australian Open 2020 is currently underway in Melbourne as top tennis players vie to remain in the last 16 to have a shot at the first Grand Slam of the year. However, not everything went as planned and some top-ranked players have been ousted from the tournament by upset defeats.

Serena Williams was projected to be among the favorites to claim title victory at the Australian Open but her journey was cut short on the third round. The world number 8 was routed from the tournament after being knocked out by China’s Wang Qiang 6-4, 7-6,6-5.

Caroline Wozniacki who had earlier announced that Australian Open will be her last participation lost to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 at Melbourne Arena in the third round. In an emotional farewell, the 29-year-old Danish reflected her storied career and was showered with tributes from fellow players.

Meanwhile, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic qualified for the last 16 with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2,6-3 victory over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.

Women’s number one ranked Ashleigh Barty defeated Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 6-3, 6-2 to secure a spot in the last 16.
