The Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy was founded 40 years ago in 1978 by Air Marshal Nur Khan, the President of Pakistan Hockey Federation. It features the world’s top field hockey teams, which compete for the trophy in a round robin format. In 1987 a biennial women’s tournament was also started.

Upon introduction of the Hockey World League, from 2014 the Men’s Champions Trophy was changed from an annual to a biennial event.

The 2018, 37th edition of the Men’s Champions Trophy will be the last edition as from 2019 the tournament will be replaced by the Hockey Pro League.

The last edition officially known as the Rabobank Hockey Champions Trophy 2018, is scheduled to take place from 23rd June till 1st July 2018, in Breda, Netherlands.
