The 11th Royal Palm Team Trophy and Challenge Shield Golf Championship 2022 will commence at the Royal Palm Golf Course from Friday, 14th January and will be contested over three rounds, eighteen holes each day with final round to be held on Sunday, 16th January.
Segments of this championship are the team event where four member teams from paramount golf clubs of the country compete against each other for top honors besides the individual gross event, the Challenge Shield based on best net score and the Ladies Cup.
And a purposeful feature of this championship is that In the Country’s National Golf Calendar this is the only championship contested on team basis. That makes it a very special occasion for those representing their club teams and getting selected as team members.
Selection process is certainly cumbersome involving capability assessment, a review of past performances and status of current form. Once selected it yields the team members honor and recognition of their merit and they in turn strive to keep their clubs name in the forefront during the days of the championship.
The premier golf clubs of Lahore have fielded two teams each and that includes two teams of Defence Raya Golf Club, two of Lahore Garrison Greens, two of Lahore Gymkhana and two of the host club, Royal Palm. One team has been entered by PAF Skyview Golf Club. From other stations, Karachi Golf Club will be competing with a four member proficient team including the very talented Omer Khalid and adept ones like Saim Shazli, Yashal Shah and Hamza Shikoh Khan. Also there is a team from Mardan Golf Club comprising the very young Laraib ur Rehman, Muhammed Darmal, Basil Rehman and Fazl e Ghani. Representing Okara Golf Club will be Nauman Asghar, Ghulam Qadir, Ali Hamza and Rehan Babar.
As for format of the Team Competition, on each day of play, the best three Gross scores of each team will be counted towards the final aggregate team total at the end of three days of tournament play. In the event of a tie in team score, the score of fourth player of last, second and first day, in that order, will be counted till tie breaks. If tie still persists spin of the coin will decide the champion team.
The playing arena will be the par 72 Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Golf Course which is admirably splendid in appearance, with fairways, greens and multitude variety of age old trees making the competing golfers feel blissful. Yet from the competing angle, golfers are tested to the full and golf course distinctive elements like fast greens, water hazards, bunkers, out of bounds, fairways contours and the weather making life difficult for those who have their eyes on the victory stand and associated glory. In all around 140 golfers will be contesting for their personal and clubs acclamation.
As for the Challenge Shield it will be contested rather vehemently. Handicap eligibility for this event is twelve and below and the contest will be over two rounds on 14th and 15th January. A fairly wide range of players will be in contention for the Challenge Shield.
