WESPA Youth Scrabble Championship 2018: Day 1

DUBAI: The WESPA Youth scrabble championship commenced at the American Academy in Dubai. Widely regarded as the largest and the toughest youth tournament in the world, there are about 120 players from all parts of the world in the championship this year.

Pakistan is vying to create an unprecedented record of winning all the major youth scrabble events having already won the The Junior world scrabble championship, the princess cup (twice) and the Causeway Challenge.

Alchemist Cup Scrabble Championship ’18: Youngest Player Pak’s Sohaib Becomes Sensation

The highlights at the end of Day 1 were:

  • Napat Vatjaranurathon of Thailand was on top with 7 wins from as many matches. he is maintaining a healthy spread of 1470.
  • Radinka Dissanayeke of Sri Lanka is second with 6 wins and a spread of 776.
  • Debutant Basil Ali Khan of Pakistan won his first 6 games but lost the last game to end the day one on the 3rd spot with six wins and a spread of 648.
  • S. Imaad Ali and Sohaib Sanaullah of Pakistan are also on six wins and a currently 5th and 6th respectively.
  • Pakistan is currently on top in the team rankings with four players in the top ten.

In the side tournament for adults:

  • Tariq Pervez is on top having won 5 games with a spread of 629.
  • Douglas Tsnag of Hong Kong is 2nd while Jackson Thomas is 3rd.
