The deadly coronavirus outbreak centered in the Chinese city of Wuhan has continued to spread outside China despite strict containment and screening measures being adopted. As the virus spreads, normal life in the affected areas has come to halt with outdoor sports activities being postponed due to health concerns.

The latest victim of the disruption caused by the containment of coronavirus has been the 2020 Asian Futsal Championship. The AFC – Asian Football Confederation has announced the indefinite postponement of the Championship due to the global spread of viral infection.

The 16th edition of the Biennial Futsal Championship was scheduled from February 26 to March 8 in Turkmenistan with 16 Asian teams to face off. No new dates have been announced by the AFC.

The 2020 edition of AFC Futsal Championship is important for the participating sides as the top five teams in the even will qualify for the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup Scheduled to take place in Lithuania later this year.

A number of other teams including Portugal, Russia and Spain have already qualified for the World Cup after winning their respective WEFA Elite League’s Group matches.

Futsal is a variant of the popular sport football. It is played on a hard court at usually inside venues and features five players on each side.
