UEFA Champions League Recap: Week 6 – Day 2

Analysis:The UEFA Champions League has come back with a bang. The match day was lit up by the away performances of two English sides. Tottenham Hotspur mounted a magnificent comeback against Juventus while Manchester City completely decimated Basel.

In what was a brilliant advert for the Champions League, Tottenham started very poorly and after just 78 seconds, their Italian opponents took the lead. Gonzalo Higuain swiveled brilliantly to finish a cross after an expertly taken free kick which Spurs were slow to respond to. The visitors’ misery was compounded when Higuain scored a penalty after a reckless challenge from Kevin Davies. After Juventus’s second goal, though, it was all Tottenham. They dominated possession and got their just rewards when Delle Alli’s pass was latched onto by Harry Kane, who calmly went around the onrushing keeper and slotted home. All of Spurs’ good work could have been undone, though, after Serge Aurier gave away a ridiculous penalty. Luckily for them, Higuain missed his spot kick. The visitors kept going in the second half and deservedly equalized through a Christian Eriksen free kick. Tottenham now go into the second leg with the advantage of 2 away goals.

Manchester City were completely ruthless in their display as they pulled apart their Swiss opponents. A brace from Ilkay Gundogan and a goal apiece from Segio Aguero and Bernardo Silva gave City the convincing margin of victory that their undeniable dominance deserved. Basel were all over the place and were massively under-prepared for a match against one of the favorites to win the competition this year. Their lax defending made it too easy for City who took full advantage and put the game, and very much the tie, to bed.
