LAUSANNE: Athletes from Russia, Sweden and Poland rose through the ranks to claim gold medals ­­­whereas Switzerland dominated the team sports on the fifth day of Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympics Games.

Overall 5 gold, silver and bronze medals each were up for the grabs on the fifth day in Alpine Skiing, Biathlon and Ski Mountaineering categories.

Marcin Zawol won first medal of the tournament for Poland after racing through the 7.5km sprint track in men’s biathlon competition. Russia’s Denis Irodov claimed silver and Norway’s Vegard Thon won bronze.

Russia is leading the medals table after with 14 medals (5 gold, 7 silver, 2 bronze) with Switzerland at a close second with 13 medals (5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze) and Japan at the third position with 5 medal wins (3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze).

Sweden dominated the Alpine skiing competition with Emma Sahlin taking gold inwomen’s Slalom and Adam Hofstedt achieving the same feat in men’s category. Switzerland’s Lena Volken and Luc Roduit claimed silver medals in women’s and men’s races respectively.

Swiss Rockstar skiers Thomas and Robin Bussard did not disappoint the home crowd and won the gold in ski mountaineering competition along with teammates Thibe Deseyn and Caroline Ulrich in the only team event of the day. Team France and Spain won silver and bronze respectively.
