Mary Kom beat opponent Nikhat Zareen to secure her place in the Indian squad being finalized to participate in qualifiers ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Kom dominated from the first round and bagged a comfortable victory with 9-1 points in the final contest of Women’s Boxing Olympic trails in the 51kg category.

However, the tension between two prominent boxers was palpable as Kom didn’t shake hands with Zareen after being declared the victor as per the sports’ customs. Zareen had earlier berated Kom for being exempted from qualifying matches and had challenged her for this match.

The next round of Olympics qualifying contests will be held in China next month between athletes from several countries to determine the final lineup for Tokyo Olympics.

The 36-year-old athlete and mother of three holds multiple world champion titles and other accolades to her name and is also a member of the Indian Parliament.
