The non favorite Spaniard Rafal Nadal has been able to book a place in the Australian Open semi-finals and came closer to winning the tournament for the second time after 2009.

The five-set match was marred by Denis Shapovalov becoming angered at the umpire Carlos Bernardes and accusing him of corruption. The 22-year-old seemed to be frustrated as he could not play in best form so seem to show his frustration by getting into a row with umpire related to the time Nadal was taking between points.

Due to his foot problem as Nadal had not been in the Tennis playing scene for the last half of the season, thereby, he was not among the major favourites.

Nadal won the opening sets 6-3, 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne but faced tough competition from Shapovalov who struck back and won the third and fourth sets 6-4, 6-3. However, the decider set was convincingly won by Nadal 6-3.
