Dominic Thiem after Marin Cilic of Croatia in 2014 became the first new Grand Slam champion at Flushing Meadows. This was also the first US Open final to be played and decided on the fifth-set tie-break.

Dominic slide past Alexander after an unprecedented comeback to win his first Grand Slam title.

Alexander Zverev in a commanding manner had won the first two sets. During which the second seed and later winner was engulfed in all sorts of problems. However, during the third set Dominic started showing his level by winning the third set, even after a break down. 

The final match score was: 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(8-6).

The 27-year-old Dominic also achieved following landmarks:

-Became the first champion of a Grand Slam who was born in the 1990s, coupled with the 55th Grand Slam champion of the Open Era. 

-The first player in the US Open’s Open history to rally from two sets down in the championship final.

-Winning of The US Open title a Grand Slam trophy after three previous defeats in finals of Tennis majors.
Dominic was runner-up at the 2020 Australian Open, lost the French Open during 2018 and 2019.

-Became the first Grand Slam champion besides Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer since Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka who won the third of his major title at the 2016 US Open.
