The former world champion Serena Williams of America has qualified for the 3rd Round of the WSO Western and Southern Open 2020 by beating Arantxa Rus. The match was played in safety bubble at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Currently at world rank 9, Williams will contest the world number 13 Maria Sakkari of Greece in Round 3 of the tournament.

Serena Williams is the only one of the top 3 players of Western and Southern Open who has qualified for the Round 3.

The WSO number 1 Karolina Pliskova of Czechoslovakia and number 2 Sofia Keninhave of America have not qualified for the Round 3 as they have lost their opening matches.

The 38 years old Serena Williams defeated the Dutch player Arantxa Rus 6-5. The match spanning over almost 3 hours had the final game wise score of 7-6, (8-6), 3-6, 7-6, (7-0).

The WSO 2020 was originally planned to be held in Cincinnati but has been shifted to the safety bubble in New York due to the corona virus pandemic.

Serena Williams has also confirmed her willingness to play US Open set to be held in same courts from 31st August to 13th September. She is confident to beat the defending champion Bianca Andreescu to whom Serena lost the final match of US Open 2019.

Serena Williams already has 23 Grand Slam victories to her credit. Further, she had been WTA World Tennis Association World number 1 for 8 times spanning over time of 319 weeks.
